Acid soils: These are pH 6.5 or lower, and classed as acid, increasing in acidity the lower the pH (the range pH 3.5-4.4 being classed as extremely acid). Search here for plants to suit these soils.
Calcareous soils: These are pH 7.4 or above, and classed as alkaline, increasing in alkalinity the higher the pH (the range pH 8.5-9.0 being classed as strongly alkaline). Search here for plants to suit these soils.
Clay / heavy soils: These are made up of fine clay particles and although hard to work, are potentially the most fertile and productive when managed correctly, with the addition of organic matter and use of deep-rooting green manures. Search here for plants to suit these soils.
Drought prone soils: These can stay dry for long periods of time and are often composed predominantly of rock or scree. Search here for plants to suit these soils.
Maritime soils: These are by the coast and may contain a level of salt. Search here for plants to suit these soils
Wet / moist soils: These can be adjacent to rivers and streams or clay soils with a shallow water-table. Search here for plants to suit these soils.
Sandy / light soils: These are made up of predominantly sand and are always prone to loss of nutrients through leaching or soil erosion. They need to have regular inputs of organic matter, and not left bare over winter. Search here for plants to suit these soils.
Shaded soil sites: These can be any soil type (one of the above) but in full or partial shade. Search here for plants to suit these soils.
