Wildflower-friendly grasses, producing a non-aggressive sward and an ideal nursery for wildflower plants (which will self-seed), and for sowing with wildflower seed for flowering lawns and meadows.
Assuming you wish to grow an area of wildflower meadow, the best patch of land is one of low fertility, anywhere that hasn’t had fertilizer or manure added for the last few years. Ground preparation is also vital for success, removing all perennial weed roots, such as couch grass, docks, comfrey, then working to a fine tilth. Stale seed-bedding is the next step where you leave the prepared ground for a flush of weeds to appear which can then be hoed off. Best time to sow new seed is Spring or Autumn.
Prepare and level seed bed with a rake, sow the seeds then tread to firm into the soil, or roll.
Ongoing care involves removing any unwanted weeds by digging out, and taking one cut per year after flowering between July – August, or grazing with animals instead of cutting.
